Uses of Mindfulness, Biofeedback, and Sport Psychology

  • Professionals: $90
  • Students: $72

Description: This workshop will take participants through theoretical and applied elements of how modern-day understanding of optimal functioning (from a sport and performance psychology perspective) is evolving. The Reaching Ahead Mental Performance (RAMP) model will be dissected into its component parts, such that older cognitive-behavioral notions of “control” can be adapted to allow for the incorporation of “acceptance” and the middle ground of “influence.” The confluence of cognition, emotions, physiology, and behavior will be discussed as they relate to performance and to life.

The following mental performance skills will be presented, weaving in principles of mindfulness and psychophysiology (Biofeedback): 1) Self-Talk Habits; 2) Mindful Attention; 3) Anxiety Tolerance; 4) Anxiety Reduction; and 5) Effective Communication. With each skill, participants will consider the realities of how to incorporate skills into daily life. Participants will walk away with resources plus two concrete skills that they can intentionally train every day, to be more resilient in the face of stress, and to feel and perform better/more consistently.

By the end of this 3-hour training participants will be able to:

  • Recognize that what can be controlled, influenced, or accepted is an important bridge between traditional Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Third Wave CBTs and ACT approaches.
  • Modify internal language and communication with others to enhance performance.
  • Explain how stress has an impact on heart rate variability and how one can proactively become more resilient to stressors before they arrive.
  • Learn why emphasis on anxiety tolerance improves subsequent teaching of anxiety reduction skills.
