Motivational Therapy for Wellness
Wednesday, January 24th, 2026 | 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM EST
Live Webinar | 5 CEUs
General Admissions: $125 Students: $99
This training begins with the origins of Motivational Therapy and compares this therapy with other, more traditional approaches to therapy, as well as some humanistic and client-centered therapies that emerged after World War II. The trainer will review the basic model of Motivational Therapy that focuses on behavior change for client wellness. As many people know, focusing on client motivation to change led to the techniques of how to interview clients that we now call Motivational Interviewing, in which the roles of client and therapist shift in important ways. Many tools and techniques for therapists interested in learning to focus on client motivation to change behaviors have been created since the 1990s. Interviewing clients using the motivational approach requires training and practice because therapists must pivot in their role in order to be effective. This is not an easy “mind switch” because therapists must practice a new way of behaving during client sessions. We will review the selection of tools and strategies that can keep motivation to change at the forefront of the therapeutic process.
The focus of the workshop is not just on how to begin to engage clients, but more on how to advance over time with clients using the motivational approach. What happens beyond initial motivational interviewing skills? We use demonstrations and role play practice as well as case studies that demonstrate when therapy is going well, when and how it is appropriate to return t clients’ own goals for change, how to determine measurable goals, and when termination of therapy is appropriate.
